Deep dives
Understanding the Nature of Change in Christians
Gradual growth is highlighted as fundamental to Christian transformation. The Apostle Paul's description of love, patience, and kindness as fruits of the Spirit challenges conventional character traits as Christians strive to embody Christ's nature. Tim Keller delves into the essence of becoming Christ-like by emphasizing the significance of steady progress.
The Power, Purpose, and Pointer of Christian Marriage
Marriage is portrayed as holding a distinctive power, purpose, and pointing to Christ's relationship with the church. Dr. Keller draws attention to Ephesians 5, illustrating the power dynamics within marriage where mutual submission is underscored. Furthermore, the purpose of marriage is unveiled as serving one another's needs, differences, and glorification.
Balancing Passion and Lifelong Commitment within Marriage
The juxtaposition of passion and lifelong commitment in marriage is broached, challenging the notion that they are incompatible. By imbuing Christ-like principles into marital dynamics, couples can navigate acceptance and resistance harmoniously, fostering growth and unity. The biblical model of marriage leads couples to uphold commitment alongside passion, cultivating a relationship based on mutual submission and reverence for Christ.
Marriage as a Pointer to Reverence for Christ
Marriage is portrayed as a reflection and pointer to one's reverence for Christ, surpassing societal and personal expectations. Dr. Keller emphasizes the transformative essence of viewing marriage not as an idol but as a means to glorify Christ. By aligning marital dynamics with Christ's sacrificial love, couples can establish a union that honors God's bigger plan and exemplifies mutual submission and reverence in relationships.
Whenever we listen or read about marriage we bring our own filters. We have filters based on our experiences and cultures.
So before we pick at this passage in Ephesians 5, let’s stand back and consider that the passage presents a view of marriage that may be challenging to our very filters. Because the biblical model of marriage is neither optimistic nor pessimistic about human nature, and it’s neither traditional nor modern.
Let’s look at it. The model of marriage in this passage has three things to it: 1) a power, 2) a purpose, and 3) a pointer.
This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on August 16, 1998. Series: Ephesians – God’s New Society. Scripture: Ephesians 5:21-33.
