Deep dives
Concerns About the Passion Translation's Accuracy
The Passion Translation (TPT) is critiqued for lacking accuracy and consistency in conveying biblical texts. It is considered more of an amplification of the translator's opinions rather than a true translation, leading to potential misinterpretations of Scripture. The translation is viewed as idiosyncratic, with an innovative yet historically questionable approach that does not align with established biblical scholarship. Specific examples highlight that while some phrases may be thoughtful, the overall effort is deemed haphazard and not suitable for serious biblical study.
The Use of Personal Revelation Claims
The claims made by the translator of TPT, Brian Simmons, about receiving divine revelations to unlock secrets of biblical texts come under scrutiny. Critics argue that his assertions of unique insights into Greek and Hebrew are not only audacious but also lack the scholarly foundation typically necessary for biblical translation. Moreover, these claims have contributed to the acceptance and promotion of TPT among some charismatic circles, despite its numerous shortcomings. The resistance to these claims is underscored by efforts to provide scholarly reviews that expose the translation's flaws, reinforcing the need for well-established and credible translations.

For the sake of the body of Christ we need to be aware of the problematic "translation" that is strangely and undeservedly popular, due to the reckless endorsement of pastors who should know better. I did NOT search for scholars who would oppose TPT. I did NOT check to see what denomination they were from. Nor did I ask them to slam the work or provide a particularly negative review. I simply hired scholars who were well-qualified and asked them each to review a different book from The Passion Translation of the Bible. They unanimously agree that it isn't what it pretends to be. Their full reviews and papers are available to you at the links above.
