Bridging Faith and Mental Health with Toni Taylor

We kick off this episode with special guest Toni Taylor, LPCC, MA, RYT! Toni is a faith-based counselor who blends mental health research with Christianity to support clients without discrediting their beliefs. She shares her approach to helping clients with religious trauma, processing their relationship with God, and rethinking their beliefs. Toni discusses how faith can be an intervention tool, using scriptures, Christian-based resources, and prayer in sessions. Her goal is to “be the gap in between” faith and mental health.

Next, we dive into our first Reddit dilemma: a woman discovers her husband is paying a $900 car payment for “an old family friend.” Initially, he lied but has now confessed. Can they recover from this, or should she leave to avoid a lifetime of drama? All three therapists weigh in on how they'd handle this situation.

In the second Reddit story, a woman is devastated when her new husband admits he doesn't find her attractive. The therapists have differing opinions on whether her husband was wrong and how to move forward.

We then discuss Meagan Good’s appearance on Club ShayShay, focusing on her relationship with religion. Javae expresses concern over her acting coach introducing her to religion at 12, while Toni provides a different perspective, challenging the notion that children shouldn’t explore religion without their parents.

We also explore a couple from season 4 of "Couples Therapy," Joey and Rex, whose relationship issues are deeply intertwined with religion. We debate who is in the wrong and whether they can make it work. It becomes clear that religion is a distraction from her unhealthy close relationship with her mother.We wrap up with a discussion on how religion and therapy are often seen as being at odds with each other.
