Living a Meaningful Life Through Novelty and Memory
To make our lives feel longer, we need to focus on creating memories. Time perception researchers explain that our brain measures time based on the memories we form. The more new and emotionally rich experiences we have, the longer our life feels when we look back. Routine and familiarity suppress memory formation, making time seem to fly by. Therefore, to extend time, we should actively seek novelty and avoid falling into monotonous routines. By trying new things, exploring new places, and engaging in unexpected activities, we can create more moments that stand out and are memorable, ultimately making our lives feel longer.
The Power of Breaking Expectations
Breaking expectations and experiencing surprises have a profound impact on our perception of time. When we encounter novelty or unexpected events, our brains are forced to pay attention, intensifying our memory formation. These moments, where our expectations are shattered and replaced by something new, become control-save points in our memory. By embracing the unknown, seeking out surprises, and challenging our routines, we can expand our perception of time and make each day feel more vivid and meaningful.
Finding Balance Between Novelty and Familiarity
While novelty and new experiences enhance our perception of time, the importance of familiar and comfortable days should not be neglected. The predictability and routine of everyday life provide stability and comfort, but these moments often go unnoticed and unmemorable. By appreciating the small, ordinary moments and engaging in mindful awareness of our surroundings, we can infuse familiarity with a sense of novelty. Balancing new experiences with cherished routines can help us find richness in both and make our lives feel more fulfilling and complete.
