Farmers in Africa face a bleak reality as food insecurity rises, with over 300 million experiencing acute hunger. The challenges include climate change, conflict, and soaring costs that leave farmers struggling to invest and recover. Personal stories reveal the harsh impact of market instability and crop loss. Female farmers face unique societal hurdles while innovative solutions like greenhouse farming are suggested. Despite these challenges, there’s a glimmer of hope with recent policy changes aimed at boosting sustainable agriculture.

Urgent policy interventions are needed to enhance access to affordable agricultural inputs and promote sustainable practices for food security.
Deep dives
Impact of Climate Change on Agriculture
Farmers in Africa are facing significant challenges due to climate change, with many reporting drastic shifts in weather patterns that disrupt their agricultural practices. A farmer in Tanzania shared how heavy rainfall destroyed a portion of her potato crops, forcing her to pause production. Similarly, a Nigerian farmer noted that delayed rains have caused cultivation difficulties, leading to concerns over food security. Such climatic extremes are causing many farmers to reconsider their farming methods, with some transitioning to greenhouse farming to mitigate risks.
Security and Economic Challenges for Farmers
Food security is further compromised by ongoing security issues and economic instability that plague farmers in various regions. In Nigeria, the farmer-herder conflict has made it dangerous for agricultural workers to access their lands, which directly impacts productivity. Concurrently, soaring prices of essential agricultural inputs like fertilizers have driven many farmers to focus on alternative trades, only practicing farming as a secondary activity. The challenges were compounded by reduced income from sales, leading many to drown in debt and struggle to sustain their operations.
Need for Systemic Support and Sustainable Practices
Farmers emphasized the urgency for policymakers to provide better access to affordable agricultural inputs, which is crucial for maintaining productivity. Particularly, investments in soil health and regenerative practices were highlighted as necessary components to enhance food security in the long term. Collaborative efforts that promote local agricultural solutions and innovation could lead to a more resilient farming sector. The hope remains for a sustainable food system in Africa, but a commitment to addressing underlying issues such as soil fertility and financial accessibility is essential for achieving that goal.
“The cost of food will just go higher and higher, because farmers like myself cannot afford to invest in farming and can’t even have their capital back at the end of the season.”
More than 300 million people faced acute hunger in 2023 according to the World Food Programme. The UN body said this was caused by a number of issues including global warming, insecurity and conflict, and food and energy price inflation.
Africa is home to millions of small farmers who are key to feeding the continent… so what are the issues they’re facing and how can they be helped?
Africa Daily’s Alan Kasujja speaks to two farmers: Crescentia Mushobozi, the founder of Tanzania Viable Farms, and Gabriel Eze, the founder of Rural Farmers Hub in Nigeria, who both work to improve the lives and yields of farmers.
