Reflections on Humboldt's journey through the Americas
Humboldt's expedition through the Americas brought forth several significant main ideas and key points. Firstly, his exploration presented a massive amount of valuable data to the Spanish government, although his suggestions for improving conditions in the Spanish colonies went largely disregarded. Secondly, Humboldt's journey led to numerous discoveries, such as thousands of new plant and animal species, mapping of the Orinoco River and the Andes, and meticulous studies of indigenous peoples. Thirdly, the information collected during the expedition laid the foundation for Humboldt's future works and inspired scientific breakthroughs for years to come. Lastly, upon his return to Europe, Humboldt settled in Paris, established connections with leading intellectuals, and dedicated himself to writing and publishing numerous books on a wide range of subjects, including botany, zoology, and astronomy.
Humboldt's life in Europe and his contributions
Following his return to Europe, Humboldt found solace in Paris where he engaged with a diverse array of scholars, artists, and thinkers, enjoying the intellectual and cultural vibrancy of the city. He corresponded with notable figures such as Joseph Banks, Thomas Jefferson, and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Humboldt conducted experiments in magnetism and made astronomical observations related to Earth's magnetism. He also worked diligently on writing and publishing numerous books, attracting admiration and respect from the scientific community. Despite financial difficulties and the strain of self-financing his publications, Humboldt's works had a significant impact, making him a respected authority on matters related to South America and influencing the likes of Charles Darwin.
Humboldt's return to Berlin and his lectures
In 1826, Humboldt was summoned back to Berlin by the Prussian king. Although he regretted leaving Paris, he found respite in the success of his lectures, which captivated audiences and provided the basis for his renowned work, Cosmos. While enduring the constraints of court life, Humboldt maintained his connections with prominent individuals and continued to captivate and educate others through his lectures. Furthermore, he planned an expedition to Russia, driven by the Tsar's desire to gain knowledge about the Western lands and potential platinum resources in the Ural Mountains. Despite his age and physical ailments, Humboldt's passion for exploration remained undimmed.
The passing of Humboldt's sister-in-law and the upcoming Russian expedition
In a poignant moment, in March 1829, Caroline Bonpland, Humboldt's sister-in-law, passed away. Caroline was an influential and remarkable woman, and her death deeply affected Wilhelm and Alexander. Nevertheless, the loss did not deter Humboldt from embarking on his next adventure: an exploration of Russia. Despite his age and physical limitations, Humboldt's excitement about unraveling the mysteries of the Ural Mountains, Siberian steppes, and Russia's border with China remained unabated.
Humboldt does a deep dive into New Spain - aka Mexico - then visits Thomas Jefferson in the United States. We also cover Humboldt's life upon his return to Europe - a span of 25 years.
