Growing up in a ranching community, the speaker developed a love for snow at a young age. He initially started skiing but was inspired by an OG snowboarder named Charlie Hicks. He eventually convinced his mom to buy him a snowboard and learned from Charlie. This marked the beginning of the speaker's snowboarding journey.
Despite his growing passion for snowboarding, the speaker had to navigate the challenges of living in a small town with limited snowboarding opportunities. He would travel back and forth between Casper and his hometown to pursue snowboarding. The speaker also faced the dilemma of choosing between football and snowboarding, ultimately realizing that his heart was in snowboarding.
After deciding to prioritize snowboarding, the speaker dropped out of college and spent a year working on the ranch to save money. He then moved to Bozeman and dove into the snowboarding scene, inspired by his friend Russell and the connection to his family roots in Bridger Valley. Despite starting with old and outdated gear, the speaker embraced the opportunity to shred the mountains and immerse himself in the snowboarding community.
The Natural Selection event was a pivotal point in my career where I had the opportunity to compete against my heroes. Despite initially struggling, I had a third chance run and landed everything, propelling me to third place. This experience gave me the confidence and recognition I needed to secure sponsorship deals and take my career to the next level.
There are several similarities between ranching and snowboarding. Both activities require assessing and navigating the terrain, working with a team, and being prepared with the right gear. Additionally, both activities emphasize the importance of making informed decisions, being adaptable, and prioritizing safety.
Following my success at the Natural Selection, my career took a different turn. I struggled with the pressure and expectations, and my passion for snowboarding diminished. It was during this challenging time that I realized the importance of finding my own path and staying true to myself. I had to reevaluate my purpose in snowboarding and rediscover my love for the sport.
When navigating the mountains, it's crucial to prioritize knowledge and education by taking courses such as Avi 1 to learn about mountain safety and avalanches. It's also important to choose trustworthy partners and mentors who can provide guidance and share their wisdom and experience. Additionally, always listen to your gut instincts and don't be afraid to pull out of a situation if something feels off or unsafe.
One key aspect of staying safe in the mountains is to never force a situation. It's important to be conservative with decision making and not let ego or external pressures influence choices. This means being willing to walk away from a line or an activity if your gut is telling you it's not the right time or conditions. Prioritizing safety over getting a particular shot or accomplishing a particular goal is essential for long-term well-being.
