The Rise of Constitutional Sheriffs
Over the past 12 years, constitutional sheriffs have grown in numbers and now represent a majority of sheriffs in the US. Initially formed in 2011 as a result of opposition to gun control legislation, these sheriffs claim authority that supersedes state or federal laws. They have taken controversial stances on various issues, including COVID measures, tax laws, land management, environmental policies, marriage equality, and immigration enforcement. Some constitutional sheriffs have been associated with militias and white supremacist groups and were involved in voter intimidation tactics during the 2022 midterms. This has led to concerns about the rise of an insurrectionist fifth column in the country.
Indictment and Corruption Allegations Against Culpeper County Sheriff Richard Jenkins
Culpeper County Sheriff Richard Jenkins was recently indicted on federal bribery charges. It is alleged that Jenkins accepted over $70,000 from three individuals in exchange for officially deputizing them and providing them with law enforcement badges and credentials. Reports suggest that he may have also supplied an individual he deputized with a $3,000 assault weapon registered to and paid for by the taxpayers of Culpeper County. After the charges, Jenkins set up a GoFundMe page to help with his legal fees, and one of the initial contributors was from the Last Box Media Podcast.

With him, our poker hand improves to three of a kind, because like Roger Stone and Paul Manafort, he was also indicted by the Mueller Probe—and in his case, pled guilty—only to be granted a full presidential pardon by Donald Trump.
