Deep dives
Marge Fleming's Background and Early Life
Marge Fleming discusses her upbringing in a small farming town in Iowa, where she learned the value of hard work at a young age. Growing up on a farm instilled in her a sense of responsibility, as she participated in various chores, including gathering eggs and helping with animal care. These experiences shaped her work ethic and appreciation for the food production process, highlighting a connection to the land and community. After moving to a nearby town, she began contemplating her future aspirations, including her dream of becoming a country western singer.
Transition to Education and Career Development
After receiving encouragement from her grandparents, Marge decided to pursue higher education, which was initially unfamiliar territory for her. She enrolled in a one-year business school, leading to her first job at a temporary staffing agency, where she managed labor placements. This transition marked the beginning of her journey into the workforce, where she learned valuable lessons about connecting with and treating people with dignity. The experience also served as an eye-opener, as she encountered a diverse array of individuals, including those struggling with addiction.
Move to Chattanooga and Career at TVA
In 1987, Marge relocated to Chattanooga to work for the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), a transition from the dynamic environment of California. At that time, Chattanooga was facing challenges, including environmental issues and a declining economy, which contributed to its reputation as a struggling city. Marge found herself in human resources before becoming a senior staff manager, where she supported the head of nuclear power. Her experience at TVA not only helped her advance her career but also deepened her appreciation for the community.
Entrepreneurship and Community Involvement
After leaving TVA, Marge began her consulting career, focusing on leadership development and management training, which she has continued successfully for over three decades. With a passion for community service, she became involved with various organizations, including helping children and adults with disabilities. Marge highlights the importance of networking and building connections through community engagement, eventually leading her to co-found the Women's Leadership Institute in Chattanooga. Her commitment to fostering leadership, particularly among women, remains a cornerstone of her work, influencing countless individuals in their personal and professional endeavors.
Growing up on a farm in Iowa, Marj never dreamed of leaving her hometown. Nevertheless, with three babies under the age of 1, she moved across the country to California and began her career.
In this episode, Marj shares what it was like “dressing” chickens in Correctionville, how she moved up the ranks at a company for 19 years, and why she started her own Leadership Training business (which is still going strong decades later).
