This lecture discusses key ideas from the 20th century philosophical short story writer, essayist, and poet Jorge Luis Borges's story "The Lottery In Babylon" which can be found in Collected Fictions. The narrator of the story, a citizen of Babylon, discusses the complex history of the Lottery, the Company that administers it, and the multiple philosophical interpretations of both of these. The Lottery ends up being the centrally determining institution in this community, and involves complex infusions of chance into its society and its workings.
