With the advent of the global space age, countries are competing with each other for a foothold in outer space. What role does Taiwan play in this space competition?
Among the 105 low earth orbit satellites launched by Space X in January 2022, one of them is a " spherical-motor-based " microsatellite developed by Taiwanese space startup Tensor Technology. The 22-year-old founder of Tensor Technology, Thomas Yen and his entrepreneurial partners have built the world's one and only spherical motor for commercial use. Through their satellite attitude control system, it saves 2/3 of the space and volume of the satellite, and nearly save one hundred thousand dollars cost in one launch.
Yen also mentions that the advantages of developing the space industry in Taiwan are that the electronics industry is well-founded, the OEM supply chain is complete and intensive, and components can be produced quickly. For example, after a product is designed in Taipei, it can be produced in the Hsinchu Science Industrial Park. The two places are close to each other so that they can often communicate and coordinate with manufacturers in person to ensure the quality of product.
