The 1980s: A Decade of Freedom and New Experiences
For the narrator's uncle, the 1980s represent a decade of freedom, independence, and new experiences. Starting college marked a rebirth for him, as it offered the opportunity to have more freedom and independence. Living on a level playing field with his peers, he made lifelong friends and enjoyed socializing, especially at the nearby beaches. The summer of 1980 was particularly memorable, with a job at the campus dining hall and frequent trips to the beach for body surfing and Frisbee. This era was also characterized by political changes, rebelliousness, the rise of MTV and music videos, innovative fashion trends, and technological advancement.
Cultural Shifts and Iconic Pop Stars
The 1980s were a time of cultural shifts and iconic pop stars. The narrator's uncle recalls the political landscape of the Reagan years. The youth of that time believed they were rebellious and voted for the independent candidate, John Anderson. The era was marked by the emergence of MTV and music videos, which showcased new wave music and inspired funky fashion trends and hairstyles. The biggest pop stars of the decade were Michael Jackson and Madonna, who had a significant impact on music and popular culture. This decade was also dubbed the 'me decade' where materialism and economic success were highly valued.
Technological Progress and Personal Milestones
The 1980s witnessed significant technological progress and personal milestones for the narrator's uncle. As a computer science major, he was at the forefront of technology, although it was still in its early stages. Notable technological innovations include the Sony Walkman, which allowed people to listen to cassette tapes on the go. The narrator's uncle began his career in tech sales in the heart of Silicon Valley, where he experienced the excitement of making money and buying his first car. Additionally, he met his future wife, got married, and bought their first home. However, he also experienced a significant event, the Loma Prieta earthquake, while negotiating the sale of their house.
Earlier this year, I asked some friends and family members if they could write a short story about their favorite decade. A decade is a ten-year time frame. For example, 1970-1979 is a decade. 1980 -1989 is another decade. I asked some friends and family members if they could write a short story about their favorite decade.
My thought was that it would be interesting to step out of the 2020s and relive a decade in the life of someone else.
What would their world look like? Culturally? Politically? What were they doing? What is it that made that decade so memorable?
Today, my uncle Alex will paint his 1980s world for you in his own words. Get ready for college, fun on the beach, Silicon Valley in its infancy and a big earthquake. Oh! And of course a lot of decade-specific vocab! Do you know what a Walkman is? By the end of this episode you will.
