Deep dives
Daily Critical Viewing for Improvement
Watching a presentation each day and analyzing it critically is an effective practice for becoming a better speaker. This involves observing various speakers, noting their successful techniques and areas for improvement. Engaging with diverse formats, such as TED Talks or online speeches, allows for a broader understanding of effective presentation styles. Over time, this habit can significantly enhance speaking skills by providing insights into what works and what doesn't in public speaking.
The Value of a Humor Journal
Maintaining a humor journal serves as a useful tool for speakers to capture and organize humorous ideas and observations. By logging jokes, funny anecdotes, or amusing visuals, speakers can easily access creative material when preparing presentations. This approach prevents the pressure of having to come up with humor on the spot during a presentation, which often leads to mental blocks. With a repository of ready-made humor, speakers can infuse their presentations with personality and engagement.
Embracing Speaking Opportunities
Saying yes to speaking opportunities, no matter how small, is crucial for building confidence and competence as a speaker. Regularly participating in lower-stakes speaking events prepares individuals for more significant opportunities in the future. The experience gained from these engagements creates a positive feedback loop where increased competence boosts confidence, encouraging further participation. By actively seeking out and accepting these chances, speakers can steadily improve their skills and presence.
Set sail for episode ninety-one of The Presentation Boss Podcast! Kate and Thomas had a conversation about what makes a great speaker. And eventually agreed that there are a number of exercises they each consciously implemented (some many years ago) that became habits and have definitely improved their skills. In all the guest interviews, these same or similar habits have been mentioned too. It's clear then, that even when not speaking, there are habits you could develop in this new year that would make you a more confident and comfortable presenter - no matter your skill level.
There's five suggestions in this episode. All are simple to implement. And honestly, doing any of them imperfectly would be a great start to building the habit and becoming a better presenter. We know though, with a little conscious effort and discipline, they'll become an easy habit that is forever improving in the background. What's not to love!?
