Deep dives
GIFT City: A Pet Project on the Verge of Failure
A decade ago, India's GIFT City, a pet project of the country's prime minister, appeared to be failing. The posh buildings were incomplete, power utilities were missing, and there were no corporate tenants. However, in 2024, GIFT City is thriving with construction, residential apartments, and 400 offices employing 26,000 people. The turnaround can be attributed to the implementation of a special economic zone (SEZ) status, offering liberal economic laws and incentives such as a 10-year tax holiday and exemption from GST. This favorable environment has attracted companies and investments, making GIFT City a potential contender for global financial centers.
IFSCA: The Game Changer for GIFT City
The establishment of the International Financial Services Centers Authority (IFSCA) in 2020 has been a game changer for GIFT City. IFSCA, a unified regulator, replaced four domestic regulators, simplifying regulations and reducing red tape for businesses. This change was significant as seen during the Silicon Valley bank crisis when startups rushed to withdraw their funds. Over $200 million worth of startup funds landed in GIFT City banks. Furthermore, GIFT City launched a dedicated bullion exchange and an exchange for Indian startups to list their shares, attracting more businesses and solidifying its position as a potential rival to London, New York, and Singapore.
In today’s episode for 14th February 2024, we tell you how the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City or GIFT City for short has convinced businesses to set up shop.
