Deep dives
Political Dissent in Eswatini
Eswatini, previously known as Swaziland, remains Africa's last absolute monarchy under King Mswati III, who has been in power since 1986. The country has a history of political dissent where sections of the population continuously call for democratic reforms. Recently, human rights issues gained attention after two members of parliament were sentenced to lengthy prison terms for charges that activists argue are politically motivated, aimed at silencing democratic voices. This reflects the ongoing struggle for democracy within Eswatini, highlighting the stark contrast between the monarchy and the demands of its citizens.
The Case of Jailed MPs
The convictions of Udu-Duzi Mabuza and Umdandeni Dube, who received sentences of 25 and 18 years respectively, have raised significant concerns over the fairness of their trial. Activists argue that the charges, which include murder and terrorism, lack credible evidence, claiming that the MPs never participated in violent protests, and that the charges are an attempt to quell dissent. The judiciary, heavily perceived as controlled by the monarchy, is viewed as a tool for political repression, leading to calls for justice and appeal processes amid international scrutiny. Organizations like Amnesty International describe their convictions as unjust, signaling a struggle for recognition of basic human rights in the country.
Striving for Change in a Monarchy
Amid the political turmoil, activists call for King Mswati to engage in dialogue and recognize the need for governance that reflects the will of the people. They assert that lasting peace in Eswatini cannot be achieved while citizens continue to face oppression and baseless legal actions against those advocating for democracy. The call for political reform emphasizes the desire for an elected prime minister accountable to the public, a marked contrast to the current appointed officials loyal to the king. As the tensions between the monarchy and pro-democracy movements persist, the future of Eswatini hinges on a challenging path toward political reform and accountability.
“These MPs were never advocates of violence. They were speaking inside the chambers of parliament. They have never joined any mass action on the streets” – Thantaza Silolo, Swaziland Liberation Movement
Eswatini’s former Members of Parliament, Mduduzi Mabuza and Mthandeni Dube were arrested following the anti-monarchy riots that claimed dozens of lives back in 2021.
Mabuza is currently serving 25 years while Mthandeni Dube was given 18 years. They are now appealing their sentences.
But human rights groups and pro-democracy activists say the pair were “silenced” for calling on King Mswati to introduce reforms.
This has been denied by the government of Eswatini.
Over the years, the southern African country has been marred by political dissent, with sections of the population calling for democracy.
