Randy Weaver, a former Green Beret and elite Special Forces member, grew up in Iowa and joined the Army at the age of 20. However, he was discharged after three years and got a job at a tractor factory. He married Vicky in 1970 and they moved to Iowa, planning to enroll at the University of Northern Iowa. But instead, they fled to Idaho to legally homeschool their son, Samuel, after Vicki had dreams of living on a mountain top and believed the apocalypse was imminent.
In 1991, Randy Weaver, his wife Vicki, and their four children moved to a remote cabin on Ruby Ridge in Boundary County, Idaho. The family became associated with white supremacist views, which led to an investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF). The ATF claimed that Weaver had illegally sold a sawed-off shotgun to an undercover informant, resulting in federal charges. When Weaver failed to appear in court, a warrant was issued for his arrest. This led to an armed standoff between Weaver and a team of US Marshals and FBI agents.
During the siege, a shootout occurred, resulting in the death of Weaver's 14-year-old son, Sammy, and a US Marshal. Vicki Weaver was also shot and killed by an FBI sniper while she held their infant daughter. The siege lasted for 11 days, with Weaver and his surviving children eventually surrendering. The incident sparked national controversy, with many questioning the government's use of force and tactics. It also highlighted issues such as government overreach, violations of constitutional rights, and the militarization of law enforcement.
In the following legal proceedings, Randy Weaver and his friend, Kevin Harris, were acquitted of most charges. Weaver was convicted of the original firearms offense and received a sentence of 18 months. However, his conviction was later overturned due to misconduct by the government. The incident at Ruby Ridge had a significant impact on public perception of law enforcement and government actions, leading to calls for greater accountability and reforms in law enforcement practices.
