Deep dives

The Life of Toussaint Louverture

Toussaint Louverture was born into slavery in Haiti, a colony then known as San Domingo. As the slave majority became inspired by the political developments taking place in France, they launched a rebellion in 1791. The rebels made significant gains and turned the rebellion into a serious military movement. The colony was also invaded by Spain and Britain, further complicating the situation. Amidst this chaos, Toussaint Louverture emerged as a skilled military and political leader. He secured victories for the rebels and eventually became the Commander-in-Chief of all Republican forces on the island. Despite facing numerous rivals and challenges, Louverture managed to build a formidable army, driving both Spain and Britain out of the colony. However, his reign was cut short when he was betrayed by his French allies and arrested in 1802. He died in captivity a year later. The brutality of the French expedition and Louverture's martyrdom fueled a new wave of resistance among the Haitian people. Eventually, Haiti declared independence in 1804.
