Deep dives
Encounter with the Yorkshire Ripper
Ruth Shaw, a young student at the University of Bradford, had a terrifying encounter with the Yorkshire Ripper in 1979. After leaving a pub, she was followed by a man who gave her an intense feeling of terror. She managed to escape when her boyfriend appeared, but the police dismissed her encounter as insignificant, leading to a missed opportunity to catch the killer. Seven weeks later, Barbara Leach was murdered in the same location. Ruth later realized that the man who had chased her was Peter Sutcliffe, the Yorkshire Ripper.
Failings in the Police Response
The case of Peter Sutcliffe, also known as the Yorkshire Ripper, is infamous not only for his brutal attacks on women but also for the numerous failings in the police response. The investigation became the largest manhunt in British history, but the police focused on the hypothesis that the killer was targeting prostitutes. Multiple opportunities were missed, including disregarding the testimonies of surviving victims and the photo fits that matched Sutcliffe's appearance. The criticism towards the police grew, and it was only after Sutcliffe was caught attempting to pick up a sex worker that they realized they had finally captured the Yorkshire Ripper.
Undervaluing Women's Testimonies
Ruth Shaw's encounter with the Yorkshire Ripper highlights the broader issue of undervaluing women's testimonies and the need for change within the police force. Despite providing a detailed statement and being assured by senior detectives that her encounter was significant, the police failed to record her report. The dismissive attitude towards her witness testimony and the lack of action showcased the disregard for women's voices and the overall failure to prevent further attacks by Sutcliffe. Ruth's story emphasizes the importance of empowering women to come forward and be heard, sparking a necessary review of cultural attitudes and practices regarding women's safety and testimonies.
