Deep dives
Understanding Relational Spirituality
Relational spirituality goes beyond a simple relationship with Jesus and considers the importance of human beings as fundamentally relational. In the book 'Relational Spirituality,' Professor Todd Hall blends psychology, neuroscience, theology, and biblical studies to present a new view of spirituality that emphasizes relationships. The goal of sanctification is seen as a relational goal, referred to as loving presence. The process of spiritual growth is primarily experienced through relationships.
Moving Beyond Rationalistic Spirituality
Rationalistic spirituality, focused on head knowledge and the idea that spiritual growth happens through learning about God and Scripture, is criticized in "Relational Spirituality." This approach neglects the importance of relational experiences and emotional engagement. It has roots in historical developments such as scholastic theology and the Enlightenment. The book argues for a more nuanced understanding of spirituality, recognizing the impact of emotional experiences and the need to integrate head knowledge with relational growth.
The Role of Emotions and Implicit Knowledge
Emotions and implicit knowledge play a significant role in spirituality. Emotions provide valuable information about our underlying meaning system and guide our actions. Psychology and neuroscience highlight the impact of early relationships and caregiving experiences on our emotional responses and relational experiences. Understanding the connection between emotions and spirituality requires embracing emotions as a starting point for transformation, rewiring old patterns through new relational experiences, and recognizing the importance of integrating head knowledge with emotional engagement.
In his new book, co-authored with his wife and psychology colleague, Todd Hall and Liz Hall, lay out a new way of looking at spirituality that takes into account insights not only from the Bible, but also from psychology and the neurosciences.
