Deep dives
The 20th anniversary of the Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics
The Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics (JCap) is celebrating its 20th anniversary. It covers various aspects of cosmology, astroparticle physics, the early universe, dark matter, particle cosmology, gravitational physics, and more. The journal focuses on excellent content and values quality and value over sheer numbers and impact factor. Papers are submitted via an archive, and an algorithm assigns them to editors who choose suitable referees. Editors and referees benefit from keeping up with the latest research and discovering new experts in the field.
The special 20th anniversary issue of JCap
To commemorate its 20th anniversary, JCap published a special retrospective issue that highlighted influential and highly accessible papers from the journal's history. The issue showcased the journal's contributions to cosmology and astroparticle physics, including key software and code used in cosmological analyses, as well as the science case for cutting-edge experiments like the IceCube and CTBT of Future Matter Experiment. Additionally, a forthcoming special issue will provide a snapshot of the current state of the field and explore future research areas.
Hot topics in cosmology and astroparticle physics
Some of the current hot topics in the field include understanding the nature of dark matter and exploring the early universe through the cosmic microwave background (CMB). Researchers are investigating questions such as the absolute mass of neutrinos, the physics behind cosmic inflation, the distribution and properties of dark matter, and the behavior of dark energy. To address these questions, scientists are leveraging observations from the CMB, developing new experiments and telescopes, and seeking novel avenues to detect dark matter. Exciting advances are expected in the coming years, driving the field forward.
Some of the biggest mysteries of physics – including the nature of dark matter and dark energy, and the origin of the universe – are in the sights of cosmologists and astroparticle physicists.
In this episode of the Physics World Weekly podcast I am in conversation with three editorial board members of the Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics (JCAP) which is celebrating its 20th anniversary.
They are the cosmologist and theoretical physicist Licia Verde who is at the Institute of Cosmos Sciences at Spain’s University of Barcelona; Erminia Calabrese, who is an observational cosmologist at the UK’s Cardiff University; and the astroparticle physicist Anne Green, who is at the University of Nottingham in the UK.
We chat about major breakthroughs in cosmology and astroparticle physics over the past two decades and look forward to the future of the fields.
JCAP has published a special retrospective collection of some of the leading papers that have been published in the journal since 2003. Next week, the journal will publish a special anniversary issue of new papers.
