The Bank of England raised interest rates by half a percentage point to 3.5% today, its ninth increase in a row as it continues to try and cool high inflation. The news came as nurses across much of the UK launched a historic strike, walking out of hospitals and onto picket lines after several years of falling pay and declining standards that have left the country’s nationalized health care system in a state of crisis.
