Deep dives
The Delay of Google Gemini
Google has faced delays in launching Gemini, a highly anticipated AI model. The planned in-person launch events were scrapped, and the company is now considering a virtual preview. The Gemini team faces immense pressure to create a model that meets or exceeds the capabilities of GPT-4. Google's CEO, Sundar Pichai, canceled the events due to concerns over the AI's ability to handle non-English queries. Gemini is viewed as a critical initiative for Google and has gathered attention from policymakers and politicians.
Getty Images Lawsuit and Partnership
Getty Images is involved in two contrasting situations. First, the company's lawsuit against Stability AI, focused on alleged copyright violation, has been ruled to proceed to trial in the UK. Getty claims that its copyrighted material was used to train AI models without permission. Second, Getty has announced a partnership with Runway, a text-to-video leader. This partnership aims to create a video model that combines Runway's technology with Getty's licensed creative content library. This collaboration allows companies to access legally protected models for video creation, addressing potential legal issues.
The AI Alliance led by Meta and IBM
Meta (formerly Facebook) and IBM have formed an AI alliance, collaborating with more than 50 AI companies, research institutions, and universities. This alliance aims to promote open alternatives to OpenAI's approach. The members include AMD, ServiceNow, Intel, Oracle, Cornell University, and the National Science Foundation. They seek to emphasize open-source innovations, collaboration, and transparency in the AI industry. The AI alliance plans to establish working groups and committees focusing on AI trust, validation metrics, hardware, infrastructure, and open-source AI models and frameworks. This coalition hopes to offer more options and diminish reliance on a few dominant AI providers.
OpenAI is not open enough; at least not according to the new AI Alliance - a group led by Meta, IBM, AMD and others that is trying to ensure AI stays more open and not controlled by just a handful of companies. Before that on the Brief, Getty Images is going to court against Stability AI while forming partnerships with Runway, and Google delays Gemini again.
