The Productive Body was a remarkably influential text that was foundational to Foucault’s treatment of the body in works such as Discipline and Punish. Yet, it remained relatively unknown in the anglophone world. This book attempts to unpack Marx’s conception of the division of labor, large-scale industry, and cooperation with the goal showing how capitalist production breaks down the body and reformulates it, producing something new and essential – the productive body.
