Contrary to common belief, a study found that higher total cholesterol levels were associated with a higher chance of becoming a centenarian. This finding opposes clinical guidelines that recommend lowering cholesterol levels. The study, conducted on a cohort of 44,000 Swedish individuals, revealed that the prevalence of heart attacks, congestive heart failure, and dementia was significantly lower in centenarians compared to non-centenarians. By maintaining cholesterol within favorable levels associated with longevity, there is a reduced risk of developing various diseases, such as heart disease, chronic lung issues, peripheral vascular disease, kidney dysfunction, and dementia.
