Expert Jimmy Akin discusses the limits of science as the ultimate guide to truth. He explores how science is unable to explain matters such as love and morality, as well as the effects of imposing scientific tests on personal relationships.
Certain truths are inaccessible to science, such as personal relationships that should not be subjected to scientific tests.
Science is unable to investigate morality and cannot definitively prove the moral wrongness of specific acts.
Deep dives
Limits of Science in Investigating Personal Relationships
Science cannot be the ultimate guide to truth in all matters because there are certain truths that are inaccessible to science. For instance, in personal relationships, it would be unwise to subject someone to scientific tests to determine their love. Such tests can disturb the very thing being observed and damage the affection. This limitation is also seen in Heisenberg's uncertainty principle on the subatomic level.
Science's Inability to Investigate Moral Goodness
Science is unable to investigate morality because moral goodness is not empirically detectable. While science can study people's perspectives on what is morally good or evil, it cannot experimentally prove the objective morality of a specific act. Science can demonstrate that torturing babies for fun is regarded as morally wrong, but it cannot definitively prove its moral wrongness.

The Limits of Science and Its Inaccessibility to Certain Truths
DAY 333
CHALLENGE
“Why shouldn’t science be the ultimate guide to truth in all matters?”
DEFENSE
Because some truths are inaccessible to science.
First, there are many subjects in life where it would be foolish to try to apply the scientific method. For example, it would be foolish for a man who desires to know if his wife still loves him to subject her to a series of scientific tests. Even if such tests were well designed, they would be likely to crush her remaining affection for him. This is a case where the attempt to impose scientific method disturbs the very thing being observed …
