Deep dives
Jonathan's Journey into WordPress
Jonathan Basinger joined the WordPress project in 2015/2016 after attending WordCamp Cape Town where he met community members and received guidance on contributing to WordPress. He started with the documentation team and gradually became more involved in conversations and interactions within the community.
Improving Learning Pathways on Learn.wordpress.org
Based on learner feedback and survey results, the training team recognized the need for structured learning pathways on learn.wordpress.org. The current learning process was perceived as random and unstructured, lacking a clear pathway for beginners. To address this, the team aims to launch progressive, user-friendly learning pathways that guide learners from beginner to advanced levels of using, designing, and developing with WordPress.
The Redesign and Timeline
The redesign of learn.wordpress.org, aimed at creating a structured layout to support the learning pathways, is expected to be completed by mid-2022. The team plans to launch the first set of structured learning pathways for beginners around the same time. The focus for this year is on the redesign and launching the initial pathways, with the overall project expected to continue into 2024 to refine and expand the content.
Combining WordPress and Video Games
Jonathan Bostinger created a video game called Dodge, where players control the WordPress logo, avoiding logos of other CMSs. He used the WordPress Activity API, Custom Post Type API, and other tools to build the game. The game incorporates user high scores submitted through the WordPress REST API, allowing for a competitive element. Jonathan also mentioned the possibility of utilizing BuddyPress for social integration in future gaming projects.
Jonathan Bossenger has been working hard to enhance the learning pathways at Learn.WordPress.org. In this episode of Press this, Jonathan discusses the work he and his team are doing to improve how new users, old-school developers, and future contributors can get the knowledge they need from Learn WordPress. We also spoke with Jonathan about his new WordPress-powered video game, "Dodge," which was created using the new WordPress Activity API.
