In the Indonesian part of Borneo, a clinic was built to stop people from chopping the rainforest by offering affordable healthcare. The clinic used seedlings as payment for medical treatment. The link between healthcare and conservation efforts is explored, with a research paper showing a decline in logging activities. Researchers found a 70% decrease in forest loss in a National Park after intervention. In Nigeria and Turkey, incentives for health insurance and community service improved health outcomes.
The establishment of a clinic in Borneo offering discounted medical care in exchange for refraining from logging has significantly reduced deforestation rates.
The unique payment system of the Azri clinic, where patients can pay for medical treatment using seedlings, promotes reforestation and provides affordable healthcare.
Deep dives
Motivating People to Protect the Rainforest
In an effort to combat deforestation in Borneo, a clinic called Alam Sahat Lestari (Azri) has been established, providing affordable healthcare to local communities. The clinic offers discounted medical care to individuals from villages that have refrained from logging trees in the rainforest. This incentivizes people to protect the environment and helps stop illegal logging. As a result, logging rates have significantly decreased, with a 70% reduction in forest loss in comparison to other Indonesian national parks. The project also focuses on retraining individuals to find alternative sources of income, such as organic farming, to replace the income previously obtained from logging.
Affordable Healthcare in Exchange for Seedlings
Asri Clinic in Borneo has implemented a unique payment system that allows patients to pay for medical treatment using seedlings instead of cash. Patients collect seedlings from the nearby rainforest and deliver them to the clinic, where they are then used for reforestation efforts. This approach not only provides affordable healthcare to individuals who cannot afford cash payments but also helps regrow the rainforest and counteract deforestation. Patients are retrained and invited to learn about the importance of preserving the environment, promoting sustainable practices.
Positive Impact on Health and Environment
The Azri clinic's efforts have had a positive impact on both the health of local communities and the environment. Rates of diseases such as tuberculosis and malaria have decreased, showcasing the benefits of improved healthcare access. Additionally, satellite imagery and self-reported data reveal a significant reduction in forest loss within the National Park. The engaging approach of combining healthcare incentives with reforestation efforts has proven to be an effective strategy in addressing deforestation issues and promoting community well-being.
How do you stop people chopping down precious rainforest? In the Indonesian part of Borneo, researchers for a conservation charity discovered that local people were chopping down the rainforest around them for an incredibly understandable reason – they needed to pay for medical treatment for themselves and their children.
So they started a project that would hopefully protect the forest and help the local communities at the same time. They built a health centre and gave people a big discount on medical care if they stopped chopping down the trees. Ten years on, we visit the forest to see what happened next.
