Deep dives
The importance of doing the heart thing
Many companies, especially startups, excel because they confront uncomfortable problems others avoid. These problems, referred to as the heart thing, include addressing poor leadership decisions, tackling product issues, and dealing with underperforming employees. However, many companies, afraid of discomfort, choose to ignore these problems. This fear often stems from believing it's not their responsibility, avoiding fault, or being afraid of the consequences. Overcoming fear and creating a safe environment to address these issues is essential for success.
Root causes for not doing the heart thing
Major problems often go unaddressed in companies due to three primary reasons: the belief that it's not their problem, hiding fault to avoid consequences and shame, and fear of the unknown outcomes of taking action. Large established companies tend to foster an attitude where individual contributions are less important, resulting in a lack of responsibility. Protecting self-image and avoiding shame can also lead to hiding fault, hindering growth. Fear, the most common reason, prevents people from taking action, often due to uncertainty and potential consequences.
Overcoming fear and taking action
Overcoming fear is crucial to doing the hard thing. By understanding that fear is often unfounded and questioning its validity, individuals can build confidence in taking action. Like a muscle, the more problems one addresses, the stronger they become in facing uncomfortable situations. Incentives, creating a safe environment for communication, and making appropriate hiring and firing decisions are key for organizations to foster a culture of addressing problems. By understanding the consequences of inaction and accepting fault when necessary, individuals and companies can improve and achieve better outcomes.
At most companies doing the hard thing is uncomfortable and we avoid addressing some of the most critical issues that can mean the difference between success and failure.
