What if we were taught.. Lets talk Breastfeeding with Tamika Newman IBCLC
Are you planning to breastfeed your baby? Did you know that your lactation journey starts as early on as the first trimester and that your labour, birth and the first week postpartum sets the foundation and determines the longevity of your breastfeeding success?
In this episode, I'm joined with International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) Tamika Newman. Tamika currently works as a private practicing IBCLC on the Gold Coast, Australia. She has practiced as a Registered Nurse and Midwife since 2005 and has worked in a large tertiary hospital setting for over 10 years. In recent years she has completed training in Orofacial Myology to expand her knowledge and clinical skill base. She has a special interest in oral restrictions, re- lactation, gut health/human microbiome, epigenetic's as well as biologically normal infant sleep and feeding practices.
This is a fun conversation where we explore;
- What colostrum is and why is it so important.
- The physiological changes that occur immediately following birth that impacts our milk production and the changes that occur in the first few days and months Postpartum.
- The importance of demand feeding and how you feed in those first few days postpartum lays the path for the longevity of your breastfeeding journey!
- How our culture normalises dysfunction
- What are biologically normal feedings patterns
- Interventions during labour and birth and how they affect milk production and breastfeeding
- The hormonal orchestra of labour and birth that is perfectly designed for breastfeeding.
- What we can do to enhance our breastfeeding hormones
- Why immediate skin to skin after birth is so important
- When intervention occurs and there is separation at birth of Mum and Baby what we can do to facilitate bonding and breastfeeding
And so much more...
