Is air travel really as safe as we think?

In the last few months there have been some very close calls with planes. In Japan a plane burst into flames on the tarmac, and a plane in Alaska lost a door mid flight, so just how safe is air travel really? And are all the recent technological advances improving flights or creating more room for malfunction?
