Senator Lundeen's Distraught State

On Saturday, August 31st, 1940, Senator Ernest Lundeen was found inconsolably crying and emotionally distraught in his office. Despite his visible distress, Lundeen proceeded with his travel plans, which included catching a flight to Pittsburgh, then connecting flights back to Minnesota to see his wife and deliver a Labor Day speech. Lundeen's secretary accompanied him to the airfield but sensed something was wrong when they didn't talk during their journey. Tragically, the plane crashed, killing all 25 passengers on board, including Senator Lundeen. The cause of the crash remains a mystery, as investigations found no evidence of fire, explosion, or lightning strike. The engines were running at full throttle before impact, but neither the pilot nor copilot were actively controlling the plane at the crash. Reports of a possible altercation among passengers and a note found that said 'Going Down' added to the intrigue surrounding the crash.
