Riot Grrrl Movement and Feminist Punk Rock

The Riot Grrrl movement emerged in the early 1990s as an underground feminist punk scene, spearheaded by figures like Kathleen Hanna. Alienated from the predominantly male punk scene, Hanna formed the band Bikini Kill and aimed to address issues such as sexism and sexual violence through her music. The movement was marked by its ‘do-it-yourself’ ethos, which combined music, zine culture, and political activism, creating a unique space that encouraged young women to express themselves.
