Deep dives
Legacy of The Great Gatsby
The discussion revolves around the enduring legacy of 'The Great Gatsby,' a story of a wealthy individual's downfall that remains relevant and is frequently adapted in various forms. Florence Welch, from Florence and the Machine, recently contributed music and lyrics to a new stage musical adaptation of 'Gatsby, an American myth.' The initial songwriting stages reflected her personal struggles and feelings of shame, leading to a creative process that aimed to process and own her experiences.
Challenges of Constant Touring
Florence Welch reflects on the challenges of continuous touring since a young age and its impact on her well-being. Her journey in the music industry included intense touring schedules and coping mechanisms, such as drinking, to handle the pressures of success and fame. Eventually, the repetitive cycle of self-destructive behaviors led to a realization that the 'fun' had dissipated, prompting a necessary break and period of self-reassessment.
Rebirth through Music and Sobriety
Following a hiatus and personal struggles, Florence Welch found renewal in music and a sober lifestyle. She embraced a new perspective on rock and roll, focusing on conscious presence and genuine connections with the audience during performances. Welch's return to touring with a sense of rebirth and heightened awareness marked a transformative phase in her artistic journey, emphasizing authenticity and connection in her music career.
Across five studio albums, Florence and the Machine has explored genres from pop to punk and soul. Florence Welch, the group’s singer and main songwriter, is by turns introspective and theatrical, poetic and confessional. She sat down with John Seabrook at The New Yorker Festival in 2019 to reflect on her band’s rapid rise to stardom. She also spoke about her turn toward sobriety after years of heavy drinking. “The first year that I stopped, I felt like I’d really lost a big part of who I was and how I understood myself,” she says. “What I understood is that that was rock and roll, and, if you couldn’t go the hardest, you were letting rock and roll down.” But eventually getting sober let her connect more deeply with fans and with the music. “To be conscious and to be present and to really feel what’s going on—even though it’s painful, it feels like much more a truly reborn spirit of rock and roll,” she says. Welch wrote the music and the lyrics for “Gatsby: An American Myth,” which opened in June at the American Repertory Theatre in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
