The Power of Whimsy and Dinner Parties (with Maacah Davis)
When Maacah Davis launched Belladonna Magazine it was the first black woman-owned print fashion publication. She describes it as brown-girl escapism—a whimsical take on beauty and fashion for multicultural, multifaceted women. Now she’s exporting that same whimsy and flair from the page to real life settings as an arts funder, event producer, and dinner party mastermind.
Maacah is an arts funder, speaker, consultant, and publisher. A curator of spaces and experiences that challenge and inspire, her work explores what cool things people could build with fewer barriers to access. She works towards a media landscape where multicultural people control their own narratives.
In this conversation we talk about:
- Whether people can change their minds
- How food can make people from different cultures feel at home
- How a dinner party can force people into discomfort that encourages vulnerability
- How curating exploratory spaces facilitates critical conversation and dialogue
- How art drives change and transformation
