Originaire de Saint-Malo, Robert Surcouf (1773-1827) vibre pour la mer et sillonne les circuits commerciaux de l'océan Indien, avant de se muer en corsaire redoutable. Alors que la France et l'Angleterre entrent en guerre, il s'illustre par la prise de navires ennemis, dont le Kent, en 1800. Après avoir amassé une fortune considérable, Surcouf regagne la terre ferme où il meurt en 1827.
