Jesus' Cry of Forsakenness

Jesus' cry of 'My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?' as he hung on the cross was a reflection of the real forsakenness he experienced. It signifies that he bore the weight of all the sins and the judgment for those sins on behalf of humanity. This cry was not a theological question seeking an answer, but a way for Jesus to express the horrors of abandonment. He knew ahead of time what he was doing and what would happen to him, as he willingly came for this very moment. His immersion in Psalm 22, which contains quotes that are fulfilled in his death, shows that these words were the reflex of his messianic calling and a testimony to the fulfillment of Scripture in the plan of salvation.
