Watering Strategy for Garden Plants

Effective watering techniques are crucial for healthy garden plants, particularly during dry spells. It is essential to check the soil moisture at least two to three inches deep before deciding to water; if the soil is damp, there is no need to water, as plants will benefit by extending their roots deeper into the ground. When watering is necessary, it's advisable to use a hose or sprinkler to soak the soil thoroughly rather than sprinkling it from above, which encourages shallow root growth. Priority should be given to container plants, particularly during summer, as their roots are shallower and they are more dependent on the gardener for water.
