Deep dives
The Shepherd's Heart and God's Will
Jesus uses the parable of the lost sheep to emphasize God's love and pursuit of those who have strayed. He challenges his followers to go after one another in love and point out each other's faults when they sin. This confrontation should be done privately and with humility. If the person listens and repents, the relationship is restored. If not, more witnesses can be involved, and eventually, the matter may be brought to the church. If the person still refuses to listen, they are to be treated as one outside of the community. Jesus teaches that the authority to bind and loose on earth is given to the church, and when two or three gather in his name, he is present with them.
The Dilemma of Idealism and Love
Jesus warns against idealism in church and emphasizes the importance of loving people as they are, not as we want them to be. He calls his followers to love one another and confront sin within the community for the sake of growth and restoration. Idealism can lead to compromise or cruelty, both of which are unloving. Jesus wants his followers to be a community that spurs one another on to love and good deeds, understanding that sin hinders human flourishing.
The Challenges and Call of Church Discipline
Jesus outlines a process for dealing with sin in the church. It starts with a private confrontation between two individuals, aiming for reconciliation. If the person does not listen, a few more witnesses can be involved. If reconciliation still cannot be achieved, the matter is brought to the attention of the church. Ultimately, if the person remains unrepentant, they are to be treated as someone outside of the community. This practice aims to maintain the integrity of the church and help individuals to remain true to God's will.
Listening and Obeying God's Voice
The essential posture of an apprentice of Jesus is listening and obeying. Followers of Jesus are called to listen to one another, especially when confronted with their own sin or spiritual drift. They are urged to resist the false promises of ideology and to stay rooted in God's truth. By surrendering to God's love and wisdom, they can experience freedom and discover life with God. Being a part of a community of believers helps individuals to spur one another on towards greater surrender and alignment with God's will.
What do we do when other followers of Jesus fall into sin and wander away? John Mark explores Jesus’ teaching on dealing with sin in the church. Even though it's one of the most abused teachings of Jesus, John Mark show that, rightly applied, it has the potential to help the church become everything it's called to be.
