#100: Gang Leader to Empowering & Funding Black-Led Startups – Karl Lokko
In this episode, I spoke to Karl Lokko, the Chairman at Black Seed, one of the largest if not the largest VC dedicated to empowering black founders.
Karl is a former gang leader from Brixton. He’s seen friends stabbed, killed, and imprisoned. The story of how Karl harnessed his gang-ridden life experiences, and how that turned him into a force for black founders in his community and beyond is truly inspiring.
In this special 45-minute episode, we covered:
- The story behind how Karl was initiated towards joining the gang and the reason behind why he wanted to remain within in and also answers whether he misses the authority that came with it
- How he transitioned into Black Seed from the gang environment
- How he finds some elements of the corporate world more challenging than his gang past
