Deep dives
The Bittersweet Nature of Love in Nicholls' Work
David Nicholls explores the bittersweet aspects of love and human relationships in his writing, emphasizing that happiness is not the primary focus of his narratives. He suggests that stories gain richness from the integration of both joy and sadness, creating emotional depth that resonates with readers. For example, in his novel 'One Day', Nicholls aims to capture the complex emotions associated with love, reminiscent of a pop song's dynamic shifts. This approach reflects his belief that falling in love is a pivotal experience that shapes one’s life, pushing characters through trials that underscore both their struggles and triumphs.
The Evolution of Television Writing
Nicholls discusses the impact of the streaming era on television, highlighting the creative freedoms it offers that were previously unavailable in traditional TV formats. He notes that the flexibility in episode lengths and international casting enables richer storytelling and diverse narratives. While he appreciates this evolution, Nicholls remains nostalgic for classic scheduled terrestrial television, which he believes laid the groundwork for his storytelling abilities. His admiration for actors informs his writing process, as he often envisions performances while developing characters and scenes.
Childhood Influences and Family Dynamics
Nicholls reflects on his childhood upbringing in a working-class family, detailing the contrasting relationships he had with his parents. His father was hardworking and often absent due to his job, which contributed to a sense of unresolved tension between them that permeates his writing. In contrast, his mother provided a stabilizing presence, nurturing his curiosity and interest in literature, leading him to frequent libraries. These dynamics not only shaped Nicholls' formative years but also influence the themes of familial relationships found in his characters and their struggles to communicate.
Creativity Through Solitude and Walking
Nicholls describes his personal habits that foster creativity, particularly his love for walking, which he finds essential for his writing process. This affinity for solitude helps him channel his thoughts, although he acknowledges the fine line between solitude and loneliness. He believes that the physicality of walking allows him to experience life in a way that feeds into his narratives, helping him develop more relatable characters. Furthermore, Nicholls hints at a blend of humor and melancholy within his work, an interplay he finds particularly enriching as he navigates these creative spaces.
The writer David Nicholls is best known for his 2009 novel One Day which has sold 6 million copies, been made into a film and a Netflix series which reached the top 10 in 89 countries. He’s written six novels and his work as a screenwriter has won him a BAFTA and an Emmy nomination.
He was born in 1966 and studied Drama and English Literature at Bristol University. This partly inspired his novel Starter for Ten. After university he spent one year in New York studying acting before returning to the UK to try and forge a career as an actor. He spent three years at the National Theatre but was mostly an understudy which inspired his novel Understudy.
After a few years, David left acting and pursued a writing career and had success as a TV screen writer. Alongside his award-winning career as a TV writer he has won many prizes for his novels.
David lives in London with his partner, Hannah and their two children.
