Deep dives
Security Measures at NJIT
New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) prioritizes campus safety with various security measures. NJIT has an 89-member police department patrolling the campus and surrounding areas, first aid squads, and emergency help boxes. They offer safety orientations for freshmen and periodic safety refreshers for all students.
Tragic Murder of Joe McElizie
Joe McElizie, a student at NJIT and a respected member of the Teak fraternity, was tragically murdered during a home invasion. After a struggle with the burglars, Joe was shot multiple times and succumbed to his injuries. The incident prompted campus-wide grief and security enhancements.
Arrest and Sentencing of Perpetrators
After a thorough investigation, two suspects, Naffey Kotman and T'Quan Harris, were arrested and charged with murder, burglary, and robbery. Both initially pleaded not guilty but later changed their plea to guilty. T'Quan was sentenced to 26 years, and Naffey received a 12-year sentence.
Legacy of Joe McElizie
Joe McElizie's legacy at NJIT lives on through a posthumous degree awarded to him in mechanical engineering. His bravery and kindness were highlighted by his fraternity brothers, teachers, and friends. The tragic loss of Joe prompted a campus-wide vigil and a lasting impact on the NJIT community.
The New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) is well known for its dedication to campus safety and student security. But its location in the city of Newark would show that no matter how tight security might be, there is always a chance for the worst to happen. And though crime in Newark was reportedly down in 2016, these statistics were meaningless to the family and friends of NJIT junior, Joe Micalizzi, who became one of the many victims of Newark’s violent crime in May of that same year.
Governor Chris Christie spoke of Joe as mentioned in this episode.
