SPEAK YOUR TRUTH NO MATTER WHAT

Not yet 30, Mateo included many semi-autobiographical elements in BLACK BUCK. He’s spent the majority of his career leading sales teams, and experienced much of the world of startups you see in the book. Before writing BLACK BUCK, Mateo realized he had been avoiding writing about themes closest to his life: race, sales, and startups. “As I probed my reluctance to write about these topics,” says Mateo, “I also realized that I felt a sense of obligation to help Black and other people of color in ways I didn’t when, at the age of 24, I managed 30 people at a tech startup. I hired many people of color, but I should have made it a focus. So I set out to write a book that was an engaging narrative, but could also double as a sales manual to help people get ahead.”

MATEO ASKARIPOUR’s work aims to empower people of color to seize opportunities for advancement, no matter the obstacle. He was a 2018 Rhode Island Writers Colony writer-in-residence, and his writing has appeared in Entrepreneur, Lit Hub, Catapult, The Rumpus, Medium, and elsewhere. He lives in Brooklyn.
