Prof Vijay Yadav, a leading researcher in Systems Biology of Aging, discusses the effects of taurine on health span and lifespan, including improvements in organ functions, mitochondrial translation, and cellular health. The study highlights the decline in taurine levels with age and the positive outcomes of taurine supplementation. Exploring the use of middle-aged mice and the need for funding, the research shows similarities with rapamycin in extending lifespan.
Supplementing with taurine can extend lifespan and improve health span in animals and potentially humans.
Taurine plays a crucial role in mitochondrial health, DNA damage suppression, autophagy regulation, and mitigation of oxidative stress.
Deep dives
Toying deficiency and its impact on health span and lifespan
The podcast discusses a comprehensive study on toying levels and their impact on health span and lifespan. The researchers found that toying levels decline with age, leading to a resistance of toying metabolism at the tissue level. This decline in toying levels and its downstream products was observed in mice, worms, monkeys, and aged humans. However, with supplementation of once daily toying, the animals lived longer and healthier lives, as evidenced by improvements in various health span metrics. The researchers also noted that the efficacy of supplementation varied based on the specific health parameter and the organ being studied.
Middle-aged mice and dosages of toying
The study began by supplementing middle-aged mice with 1000 milligrams per kilogram of toying to counteract the decline in toying levels that occurs at this stage of life. However, the researchers also acknowledged the importance of investigating when toying metabolism is compromised in humans. Furthermore, they expressed interest in conducting interventions at different phases of life to determine if transient supplementation could extend health span and promote healthy aging. The researchers also considered safety limits and dosage equivalents in humans, highlighting the need to explore organ-specific responses and the involvement of different organ functions in the aging process.
The role of taurine in mitochondrial function and senescence
One key finding of the study was the active importance of taurine to mitochondria. Taurine was observed to modify transfer RNA (tRNA) required for mitochondrial translation, particularly for complex one protein and d6. Deficiencies in taurine led to complex one deficiency, increased oxidative stress, and various consequences such as DNA damage. As a result, taurine played a role in suppressing DNA damage, regulating autophagy, and mitigating oxidative stress. The researchers noted that taurine appeared to impact both the creation and suppression of senescent cells, emphasizing its potential as both a xenomorph and a senolytic. They further hypothesized that taurine's role in mitochondrial health could be a contributing factor to its overall positive effects on cellular, organ, and organismal health.
We talk to Dr Vijay Yadav about some of the results in terms of lifespan and healthspan from the recent paper that he was the main author on.
Dr Yadav leads the Systems Biology of Aging Laboratory, which aims to identify novel functional connections between organs and to unravel factors that underlie human metabolism and its disorders. The lab's expertise is in the development of a variety of technologies including mouse genetic (CRISPR/Cas, homologous recombination in embryonic stem cells, iPS cells), genomic (Nucleic acid sequencing), and proteomic (MS/NMR/HPLC). The ultimate aim is to identify novel therapeutic targets for genetic and metabolic disorders to manage these diseases in humans.
