Deep dives
Challenges of the Declining Side of the Church Life Cycle
The declining side of the church life cycle presents unique challenges for churches, including finding clarity of mission. When churches lose focus on their mission and the people they aim to reach, decline becomes inevitable. The declining side consists of three phases: maintenance, preservation, and life support. In the maintenance phase, attendance growth plateaus or declines while finances remain relatively stable. Complexity and over-programming are major challenges in this phase. To return to health, churches in maintenance need to prioritize renewing their vision, reaching new people, and simplifying their ministry programs.
Challenges of the Preservation Phase
The preservation phase is marked by attendance and financial decline, with most strong leadership having left the church. Churches in preservation focus on preserving the past and often become divided on how to do so. Unity constraints become a core challenge, leading to decision-making difficulties and resistance to change. To move towards health, churches in preservation need to create urgency around change, revisit their mission, and make necessary governance adjustments to simplify their structure.
Challenges of the Life Support Phase
The life support phase is the final stage of the church life cycle, where churches face a choice between closing their doors or experiencing a total relaunch. Attachment to the past and resistance to change pose major challenges. Survival constraints become dominant, with a focus on keeping the church financially afloat rather than ministry priorities. For those willing to relaunch, embracing a new mission and implementing change through firing themselves, hiring new leadership, or giving the keys to another church are viable options. Ultimately, a willingness to abandon old methods and adapt to God's new work is crucial for churches in life support.
The majority of churches today self-assess that their church is currently in decline and on the right side of the lifecycle in maintenance, preservation, or life support.
In this episode, Tony and Amy wrap up our series by walking through the key challenges of the declining side of the lifecycle and offering next steps for moving back to health.
