Deep dives
Discovery of a Gruesome Murder
The episode begins with the discovery of a decapitated body in Wisconsin, identified later as Reese Pocan. A caller reported the incident to the Sheboygan County Sheriff's Office, indicating he stumbled upon the body while walking his dog. Upon arrival, authorities found the corpse severely decomposed, with missing head and hands, complicating identification. Despite this gruesome scene, the initial determination of the death cause was left undetermined, raising questions about the investigative protocols of the time.
The Bizarre Circumstances of Reese's Disappearance
Reese was last seen on August 10, 1989, after dropping her daughter off with her sister. Her movements afterward involved bar hopping, culminating in her leaving with a man called Harry, who was known for helping intoxicated individuals. However, she would eventually vanish that night, with conflicting witness accounts regarding her last moments. The lack of follow-up by authorities on her disappearance was attributed to assumptions about her lifestyle, particularly concerning her identity as an Indigenous woman.
Investigation Challenges and Suspects
Inquiries into Reese's murder led to two main suspects: her boyfriend Chris and her abusive ex, Larry. Chris's behavior, including changing his story and selling his vehicle, raised red flags for investigators, while Larry's past abusive relationship with Reese came to light. Despite family suspicions and a lack of solid evidence, neither man was conclusively linked to the crime. As leads dwindled, the investigation faced challenges, most notably the systemic issues affecting Indigenous women, leading to a perception of neglect in Reese's case.
Reopening the Case and New Leads
The investigation into Reese Pocan's case was reignited nearly three decades later, with a new detective assigned to reevaluate the evidence and tips. Discoveries led to a revisit of the early confessions claiming to know who murdered Reese, alongside a potential connection to other similar cases in Wisconsin. As this renewed interest gained traction, the detective reached out to local authorities and the Bureau of Indian Affairs to bolster the investigation. The episode concludes with the promise of deeper exploration into possible serial connections in related cases, seeking justice for not just Reese but potentially other victims.
