Implant Dentistry Training and Expertise
Implant dentistry requires a unique skill set and specific training compared to traditional dentistry. The expertise includes familiarity with handling several cases to understand and address challenges effectively. Proper training in implant restorations and clinical research is essential to ensure successful outcomes.
Complications and Challenges in Implant Placement
Despite advancements in implant dentistry, challenges and shortcomings in implant placement are being increasingly recognized. Implants do not perfectly substitute natural teeth, leading to issues like open contacts over time due to peridontal fibers shortening and pulling teeth toward the midline.
Addressing Open Contacts and Maintenance
Dealing with open contacts in implants requires various corrective measures, including orthodontics, crown replacement, or restoration adjustments. Patients should be informed that their natural teeth may shift over time, affecting implant restorations. Preventive measures involve ensuring proper interproximal contact and using occlusal guards to prevent teeth movement.
Material Preferences and Occlusal Schemes
Zirconia is a preferred material choice for implant restorations due to its durability and tissue-friendly properties. Clinicians prioritize durable materials like zirconia over alternatives like resin-based crowns, considering factors like longevity and material resilience. Occlusal schemes for implants emphasize balancing forces and minimizing lateral loads to ensure long-term stability and functionality.
