Deep dives
The Evolution of Pride
Pride is an emotion linked to the display of power and resources within social hierarchies. It helps individuals assert and maintain their positions in the hierarchy, particularly in areas such as wealth and territory. Prideful individuals often achieve higher status and reproductive success, leading prideful genes to be passed down generations. The neuroscience of pride involves the striatum and amygdala, which evoke unconscious emotions, and the medial prefrontal cortex, which engages conscious self-awareness. Studies show that manipulating the medial prefrontal cortex impairs the ability to feel pride and promotes self-awareness and self-criticism.
Authentic vs Hubristic Pride
There are two distinct types of pride: authentic and hubristic. Authentic pride is associated with accomplishments, self-worth, and self-esteem. It motivates individuals to work hard and achieve goals that align with their identity and values. On the other hand, hubristic pride can be more destructive, leading to arrogance, overconfidence, and even narcissism. Hubristic pride is often a defense mechanism to compensate for low self-esteem, but it hinders good relationships, happiness, and personal growth.
Harnessing Authentic Pride and Overcoming Hubristic Pride
To foster authentic pride, individuals should seek accomplishments that align with their values and challenge them but are attainable. Focus should be on personal growth, not on seeking external validation or approval. Recognizing and acknowledging the role of luck, privilege, and the support of others in one's achievements promotes humility and a healthier form of pride. Overcoming hubristic pride involves self-awareness, therapy, accountability, and embracing the process of self-improvement.
Becky Ripley and Sophie Ward take a cold hard look at the psychology behind each of the seven deadly sins. Rolling with the order established by Pope Gregory the Great, first up is pride, followed by greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, and (finally) lazy old sloth. Why have we evolved these ugly emotions? What’s going on in the brain and the body when we feel them? And how best can we live alongside them - in ourselves and with others?
Pride - also known as the "original sin" - is now a bit of a double-edged word. The good side is motivating and self-affirming: to be proud of your work, your kids, or your identity. But then there’s the ugly side of pride: thinking you’re better than others. Arrogance, narcissism, an inflated sense of superiority. How can we have one without the other? Confidence without arrogance? Self-worth without self-aggrandisement?
To guide us through this mess is evolutionary anthropologist Dr Anna Machin from the Department of Experimental Psychology at the University of Oxford, neuroscientist and clinical psychologist Professor Ian Robertson from the Department of Psychology at Trinity College Dublin, self-aware narcissist and motivational speaker Lee Hammock, Professor Jessica Tracy from the Department of Psychology at the University of British Columbia, and a parade of people at a Pride march.
