This session invites family law practitioners to explore how they can better support 2SLGBTQI+ individuals and families navigating legal transitions. Attendees will start by examining the unique cultural and personal challenges that members of the 2SLGBTQI+ community may bring to their legal cases—challenges often shaped by a history of trauma that may not be immediately apparent to those outside the community. The session will highlight the importance of understanding the historical context of 2SLGBTQI+ unions and how this history impacts clients today. Participants will learn how to assess the potential harm clients have experienced and, most importantly, identify concrete steps they can take to better meet the needs of 2SLGBTQI+ clients in their legal practice.
