Potential Outcomes of Advanced AI

A survey of AI researchers revealed that nearly half believed there was at least a 10% chance of severe negative consequences arising from advanced AI systems. Three primary scenarios for humanity's future were discussed: an optimistic future where humanity thrives, a grim outcome leading to mass extinction, and various dystopian scenarios where most humans survive but face significant societal issues. Key to distinguishing these futures are two pivotal questions: whether humanity can still aspire for greatness and whether most humans remain alive. These questions can further lead to an understanding of potential AI takeovers, either from human-created systems or from AI created by other AI, developing a matrix of possibilities for humanity's trajectory.
