Deep dives
Consolidation and control of the tech industry
The tech industry has experienced significant consolidation, with Google controlling 90% of search, Facebook controlling 70-80% of social media, and Apple and Google dominating the mobile operating system market. These companies have access to user data and sell it to advertisers. The power of big tech has also extended to app stores, where they have censored and controlled who can be on the platforms.
The need for an independent phone platform
Due to concerns about privacy and control, a new phone platform called "unplugged" has been developed. This hardware and operating system, built by the CTO of the offensive cyber virus Pegasus, offers a secure alternative to mainstream phones. The goal is to provide users with a phone that does not harvest or sell their data, and includes features like a kill switch to ensure complete privacy. This independent phone platform aims to cater to adults who prioritize the security and confidentiality of their personal information.
Features of the "unplugged" phone
The "unplugged" phone is an Android-based device with its own proprietary hardware and operating system. It is not manufactured in China and has its own supply chain. The phone guarantees that user data is not collected, stored, analyzed, or resold. It includes its own secure messenger with features like voice and video calls, generating new encryption keys for each call. The "unplugged" phone is priced at just under $1000, with a $10 monthly fee starting from the second year.
Building a Home Guard in Taiwan as a Deterrent
In order to deter a potential invasion by China, it is suggested that Taiwan should build a serious home guard. This home guard would consist of around 3% of the Taiwanese population, or approximately 720,000 people, who would be equipped and trained in basic firearms and tactics. By creating this home guard, it would introduce an element of uncertainty for the Chinese, as the first 24 to 40 hours of an invasion are typically vulnerable for the invading force. The presence of a well-prepared and armed home guard could significantly impede the success of the invasion and occupation.
The Significance of Taiwan's High-End Computer Chip Manufacturing
Taiwan's importance to America and the global economy lies in its manufacturing of high-end computer chips. Approximately 90% of all high-end computer chips, which are essential for various devices, including cameras, phones, cars, and aircraft, are produced in Taiwan. Additionally, 50% to 60% of mid-range computer chips also come from Taiwan. While efforts are being made to establish chip plants in other countries, such as Korea and Japan, Taiwan remains the primary source of high-end chips. This high dependence on Taiwan's chip manufacturing creates a significant risk, as any disruption in the chip supply could have severe consequences for the global economy.
